Angela's guide

How to use Angela's Wand

Everything here is yours to download, print, edit and change. This page explains where things are and how to keep the library current.

Finding a lesson

  • Library lists the four segments, ten units and twenty-nine chapters in textbook order. Chapter numbers match the lesson numbers in Bring Science Alive! 7th Grade Integrated.
  • Search finds chapters, vocabulary terms, worksheet and lab titles, and standard codes (try a code like MS-PS1-5).
  • All resources is one filterable table of every presentation, worksheet and lab with its downloads.
  • Standards shows which chapters, worksheets and labs address each Grade 7 performance expectation and whether they assess it, give practice toward it, or support it.

What a chapter page contains

  1. Overview, essential question, and the phenomenon with notice-and-wonder prompts.
  2. Learning targets written for students and the evidence that shows they were met.
  3. Key vocabulary with definitions and a sentence in context.
  4. Standards alignment with an explanation for each code, plus the practices, core ideas and crosscutting concepts.
  5. The presentation: browse the slides on the page with the speaker notes beside them, project them full screen, or download the PowerPoint, the PDF, or the speaker notes.
  6. Ten worksheets. Each card has the student PDF (low ink), an editable Word file, an HTML preview and, under “Teacher only”, the answer key as PDF, Word and HTML.
  7. Three labs. Each card has the student recording sheet and, under “Teacher only”, the full teacher guide with materials, cost estimate, prep, safety, procedure, expected observations, debrief and key.
  8. Teacher guidance: a suggested sequence, misconceptions, differentiation, and accuracy notes where the textbook simplifies.
  9. Source references with printed and PDF page numbers, and related chapters.

Printing

  • Worksheet, key and lab PDFs are US Letter with low ink use. Print two-sided to save paper; the name line is on page one.
  • Every chapter page has a Print this page button that prints the overview, targets, vocabulary, standards and teacher guidance without the navigation.
  • The presentation PDF prints one slide per page; the speaker-notes PDF prints the notes alone.

Downloading a whole chapter

Each chapter page has two bundle buttons at the top. The Student bundle holds the presentation PDF, all worksheet and recording-sheet PDFs and Word files, and contains no keys, so it is safe to post for students. The Teacher bundle adds the PowerPoint, speaker notes, answer keys and teacher guides and is password-protected.

This is the teacher edition: answer keys, lab teacher guides and speaker notes are linked here for your own use. To give students a website, publish the student edition instead; it is built without any teacher files at all. The Teacher bundle zip on each chapter is password-protected (password in tooling/bundle.py).

Teacher edition and student edition

There are two builds of this site. The teacher edition (this one, unless the footer says otherwise) links every answer key, lab teacher guide, speaker note and editable PowerPoint. The student edition is built separately and does not contain those files at all, so a student cannot reach a key by guessing a link. Use the teacher edition yourself; publish only the student edition anywhere students can see it. The project's tooling/package.sh produces both.

Editing materials

  • Slides: open the .pptx in PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides. Text, shapes, charts and diagrams are editable; speaker notes are in the notes pane.
  • Worksheets, keys and labs: open the .docx in Word or Google Docs. Diagrams are inserted as images in the Word version; the PDF and HTML versions carry the vector diagrams.
  • Changing the site itself: every chapter's content lives in plain JSON files under site/src/content/chapters/. Edit a worksheet's question there, run the build scripts in the project README, and the PDF, Word, HTML and the web page all update together. The dedication on the home page is in site/src/data/site.json.

Teaching approaches, not learning styles

Resources are labeled by the kind of work students do (discussion, reading, visual modeling, writing, investigation, collaboration, independent practice, data analysis, engineering design) so you can vary the approach across a week. They are not labels for kinds of students.

Keeping the science honest

Every dataset invented for a worksheet is marked “simulated”. Where the textbook simplifies a concept, the chapter's accuracy notes say so and give the accurate version. Standard codes are taken from the California Department of Education's Preferred Integrated Course Model documents, and connections to Grade 6 or Grade 8 standards are labeled as such.
