Physical Science · California Grade 6 · integrates engineering
MS-PS3-3
Apply scientific principles to design, construct, and test a device that either minimizes or maximizes thermal energy transfer.
Clarification statement: Examples of devices could include an insulated box, a solar cooker, and a Styrofoam cup.
Assessment boundary: Assessment does not include calculating the total amount of thermal energy transferred.
Chapters
This is a California Grade 6 PE. Lab 3 revisits it: students design, build and test an insulating container that slows the energy flowing from the room into an ice cube. The chapter treats the lab as practice of the Grade 6 PE in a Grade 7 context, connected to melting as a state change, and does not calculate energy transferred.

| Ch. 24 | Lab 3 · Save the Ice Cube: Design, Test and Improve an Insulated Holder Engineering design challenge | practice | This is a California Grade 6 PE, revisited here in a Grade 7 lesson on state changes. Students design, build and test an insulated holder and explain its performance with energy transfer and particles. No one calculates the energy transferred, consistent with the assessment boundary. |
